What is the Teaching with Primary Sources Mountain Plains program?

The Teaching with Primary Sources Mountain Plains (TPS-Mountain/Plains) program provides professional development to access and use the over 13 million digitized primary sources and vast collections of material from the Library of Congress. The goal of the TPS-Mountain/Plains project is to develop a professional development network that reaches out to regional educators to partner with educational institutions within the region to train in-service and pre-service classroom teachers, faculty such as librarians, media specialists and educational support personnel, and college faculty to access, use, and develop curriculum utilizing digitized primary source materials from the Library of Congress (LOC) collections.

Why participate in the TPS-Colorado Program?

There are numerous reasons to participate in this curriculum enhancement program. As a TPS regional partner, your group will be part of a national program which helps its participants learn to access and use Library of Congress online materials and other digital primary sources. Program participants also become influential mentors in their schools and help others learn to best access, use, and create digital media resources in the classroom. Participants will also have the opportunity to obtain Library of Congress American Memory Certification, go on to advanced seminar, and become a TPS Ambassador, which could lead to a fellowship at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C.

How can my organization participate in the TPS-Mountain Plains Program?

The TPS-Mountain Plains program seeks to create partnerships with existing educational institutions which have the ability to reach and support K-16 educators.  These groups are encouraged to submit proposals using the Regional Application Form. Grantees will be eligible for up to $15,000 in funding to assist with the implementation of the program.  For general inquiries, please contact the TPS-Mountain Plains Regional Center at the Metropolitan State College of Denver at (303) 352-4945 or via email at mscd-tpscolorado@mscd.edu.

TPS-Mountain Plains Course Overview

TPS-Mountain Plains Regional Center has established a three-part framework as a guideline for partner institutions to implement primary source based professional development for educators.  This framework allows partners to integrate a TPS professional development program into existing methods.

Level 1 -TPS Foundations: The Foundations course is the core of TPS project and will introduce participants to finding, teaching with, and integrating primary source materials into their classrooms.

Level 2 - TPS Advanced Seminar : The TPS Advanced Seminar will allow those who have completed the Foundations Course to continue their research by participating in a collaborative online seminar. Participants will discus, create, and evaluate primary source-based learning activates.   The seminar encourages participants to utilize collaborative technologies.

Level 3 - TPS Ambassador: The TPS Ambassador program allows participants to disseminate their materials through the TPS Regional Center and add to a growing collection of field-tested primary source based instructional materials.  Upon completing the program, participants will be awarded the Library of Congress Ambassador status, which will allow them to apply for summer fellowships at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C.

Why Use Primary Sources ?
Primary sources are snippets of history that may include letters, manuscripts, diaries, journals, newspapers, speeches, photos, interviews, and others. They often come with minimal context. Working with primary sources requires students to be analytical, to examine sources thoughtfully, and to determine what else they need to know to make inferences from the material. History comes alive for students that are motivated by primary sources. Analysis of primary sources will deepen student understanding of the curriculum through developing students' memory, reason, and imagination to foster empathy for the past, perspectives on the present, and the ability to influence the future.
